Ghada Amer

is it just me or is Ghada Amer Egypt's answer to Tina Fey?

seriously though, I don't know how funny Ghada Amer is, but her artwork is rather amazing. I just recently watched an episode of Art: 21 featuring her and I was happy to rediscover her. I saw an exhibition of her work at the Brooklyn Museum a while back, and I fell in love with what she was doing. She creates abstract canvases using thread and incorporates erotic feminine images into her paintings. She plays around with femininity not only with her overtly sexual subject matter, but also by using a material which is traditionally thought of in relation to women. if you haven't seen her work before I highly suggest checking her out. even if she's not as comically gifted as Miss Tina Fey.

the lady loves her phones.

in honor of the news that Lady Gaga will be collaborating with Polaroid on specialty projects, i thought it would be nice to take a look at two of Lady Gaga's other (relatively) recent collaborations.

personally, i think telephone is much better than videophone. but that's just me.

goats.

i've been thinking lately that i would benefit from a big change in my life. for example, wouldn't it be wonderful to pick up for a month or so and go milk goats somewhere out west? i think so. growing up on long island and spending most of my adult life in classrooms or art galleris hasn't exactly given me a hands-on appreciation for the land. youtube, however, has given me a great appreciation of goats (at least of the fainting variety). i would like to channel this sentiment into practical experience. also a plus: i love cheese. goat milk makes great cheese! wouldn't cheese making be a valuable life skill? absolutely. and goats are adorable. who wouldn't want to hang out with such cute old man looking animals all day? until i come to the decision to make my goat milking dreams a reality, i will live vicariously through adorable, if not totally educational or helpful, youtube clips of goats being great at being goats (who fall over).

and so can you!

*note: my desire to farm with goats is not limited to the ones who go all stiff-legged when startled, but they do make for the most endearing videos.

Mustmayostarayonnaise

Also on the subject of combining condiments, there's this gem from Mr. Show. Mustmayostarayonnaise would sure give Dijonnaise a run for its money.

dijonnaise

advertising is all around us. more worrying, advertising is inside us. what i mean to say is, for the past week or so the jingle for Hellmann's Dijonnaise has been stuck in my head. this is a commercial i haven't seen or thought about in years. it is for a product i never even thought about buying. and yet, suddenly, i started singing di-di-di-dijonnaise. i resent the fact that Hellmann's is taking up prime real estate in my brain. take a gander at the commercial for yourself. or don't. i would hate to get dijonnaise stuck in your head too.

quinoa.

quinoa is delicious and nutritious. it is the only complete vegetarian protein and it's also what's for dinner tonight. in honor of that, please to enjoy these videos of David Lynch cooking up some quinoa. David Lynch and quinoa- two things everyone can enjoy!

Avatar

against my better judgment, i went out the other night and spent actual money to see Avatar...in 3D. from all of the previews and commercials i saw prior to this i had a feeling that the movie was not going to be good. however, enough people expressed to me how amazing it truly was, and due to a feeling of morbid curiosity, i ventured to the movie theatre to experience it for myself. lesson learned: always trust your intuition.

granted, 3D is a fancy trick in movies, there were some cool visuals, and clearly Avatar exhibited some crazy new technology. it was pretty and impressive- there's no denying that. however, no amount of impressive visual effects are going to make up for a lackluster and hackneyed storyline.

my impression of Avatar is that it was a weird mix of Ferngully and Pocahontas, with some Star Wars thrown in just for good measure. and i think it could have been more successful had it embraced the simplistic nature of the story by not taking itself so seriously. it could have worked as a cartoon. for children. but instead it is a live action film for adults.

someone please explain to me how so many people have genuinely loved this movie. how did it win best picture at the Golden Globes? explain how the plot made sense and why were there avatars in the first place? i truly disliked this film. but at the same time, i spent so much time laughing i can't say that it was all bad.
